about
All proceeds from this track go to The National Woman's council of Ireland.
“The song talks about scandals in Ireland, past and present, from the women of this country being let down when in need of healthcare, to the horrors of the Catholic Church. To end, it questions what it is to be let down by “Ireland”, as though there is one point which encapsulates the state at which to aim one’s anger”
Mick.
lyrics
Rosaleen, have you seen your daughter yesterday?
Rose, I heard that little girl was worried and afraid
Suffering, she spoke the words “I do not want to die”
And yet you sent her walking, soft into the night
I have not seen her since, but at night I hear her sing
Rosie, I try to love you but you won’t love me
I hear her call her mother’s name, in a fevered dream
Rosie, I try to love you, but you will not love me
Rosaleen who was that man that sat and talked all night?
His gold cross glistened in your room against his robe of white
And then this morning walking, with your youngest son
Hand in hand down to the woods, yet only he returned
That boy would run and smile and climb the orchard tree
Rosie, I try to love you but you won’t love me
I passed him weeping low now, his head between his knees
Rosie, I try to love you but you will not love me
Rosaleen, when I speak do you hear me at all?
Or did I make a god of you while I was all alone?
Alone, as Connolly alone, propped up in a chair
Bullets in his chest for you and no Roisin to care
If he were here, if he could could see
Rosie, I tried to love you but you will not love me
I see him take you by the hand and I hear him softly weep
Rosie, I tried to love you but you will not love me

A brilliant album! It is really hard to pick a favorite as they are all amazing works of art. The lyrics are all very potent and real. Light a Fire conjures up a very vivid but more unusual picture but every track has me gripped and listening. Another deep and meaningful album which is very well put together. elly-t
Title track was the first I'd ever heard of Jeff's work and it struck me like a ten-ton hammer.
Was a perfect fit for the small-town college I was attending at the time, not far from train tracks itself.
Every time I hear this, I can see the amber light of the street lamps and think about a few walks I made around campus in the dead of night.
Still haven't grabbed hold of the life I've been given as firmly as I ought to, but this song soothes my regret...and the chorus reminds me.... moonandstar8765
