about

King of Hate

In 1914 Alekhine was imprisoned with other Soviets in Germany. He had been playing a chess tournament there when WW1 broke out. He was released earlier than others and on his return to Russia he played in chess tournaments and sent winnings to Germany to fight for the remaining prisoners’ release.
King of hate refers to his ostracisation from the chess community after world war 2.
He had co-operated with Nazi Germany in order to save his chateau in France.
Cuba denied him a visa though he offered Capablanca a rematch in return.
Murderous hands refers to the theory that Alekhine was killed by either Russian or French agents. “Died a King” refers to him having died as the world chess champion, all other champions were defeated whilst alive.
